"Oliver Reed died from a heart attack during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta, on the afternoon of 2 May 1999. According to Gladiator screenwriter David Franzoni, Reed had encountered a group of sailors on shore leave from British frigate HMS Cumberland in a bar, and challenged them to a drinking match." He consumed 8 pints of beer, 3 bottles of rum and about a dozen whiskeys.
